Message from Conference Chair
“In the past decade, the Globalization, Diversity, and Education Conference has unfolded into a different type of gathering: one that strives for community through deep meaningful conversations about difficult global and local social problems, possibilities and action. We have been moved to laughter and tears by powerful keynote speakers and documentaries that pushed us out of our heads into our hearts. In the spirit of building a Northwest community of engaged scholars, activists and thinkers from an array of academic arenas and organizations, we welcome students, teachers, professors and community organizers to join us in the worthy and difficult work of facilitating more equitable thinking, teaching, learning, schooling, and being in the world.”

They said it…
GDE is a supportive and challenging environment for scholars and activists to engage in stimulating and at times difficult dialogue on today’s educational issues.
—A.G. Rud
Every year, the Globalization Conference brings together top scholars from institutions and organizations all over the country, and in fact, from various areas of the world. These well-respected thought leaders share research, dialogue, and strategize deeper ways of working together for greater justice in schools and communities. The energy and commitments to rejecting racist policies and practices and mobilizing higher education, K-12 education and community organizations for equity and justice was powerful to witness.

Teacher Education – Residency Certificate
b.chapmanYou are in the home stretch! It is teaching certification time!
We cannot congratulate you enough for all the hard work you have put in. While the teaching certification process may seem confusing at first glance, we can help you take a deep breath and easily understand it.
In order to be awarded your certificate, a candidate must:
- Earn a bachelor’s degree (or higher) from a regionally-accredited college. That includes us.
- Complete a state-approved teacher prep program. That includes ours.
After this process is complete, we recommend your certification with the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction. We will then send you an email (to your WSU email address) with instructions on how to apply using the state’s E-Certification portal.
You may then receive the Residency Certificate (First Issue), which is valid for three years from the time you are reported as employed by a Washington school district as a teacher with 1.5 FTE experience, or more.

Testimonials
Here are the comments of some previous cohorts…
“…clarified what pitfalls counselors may experience in a process that is clearly designed for teachers.”
“I loved how Jane seemed to have a plan from the beginning. For example, she knew what we would be focusing on in the upcoming sessions which helped set the pace as to where I should be in the NB process. I loved all of her advice and encouragement.”
Heather, NBCT North Carolina
“I’ve watched the tutorial power points–several times 😉 –each time gleaning something more. It has been so helpful. I find that with every edit of my writing things become a little clearer.”
Michelle, NBCT Monroe, WA
“…Our cohort meetings provide a safe opportunity for asking questions and clarifying information. The collaboration and feedback which I received from Jane and my cohort colleagues is invaluable! I thougth that I was answering the prompts accurately. Then, I joined this cohort group and I found out that I was obviously off target.”
Kathy, Elementary School Counselor, California
All NBPTS School Counseling programs are facilitated by Jane Oczkewicz, NBCT ECYA/School Counseling. Jane has twenty years school counseling experience as well as ten years classroom teaching experience. She has facilitated at multiple levels for National Boards including WEA Jump Start, WEA Home Stretch, and for the WSCA.
Slight differences. Same great service!
Requirements for the NBPTS School Counseling certificate differ somewhat from the NBPTS teaching certificates. School counselors manage different challenges in their practice than their teacher colleagues. To better meet this need, WSU offers a National Board Support Program specifically designed for school counselors. WSU provides four interactive online support opportunities specifically for school counselors.

Preparing for your advising appointment
- Watch your WSU email for announcements and updates from your advisor! All correspondence will be sent to your assigned WSU email address. You are responsible for checking this email address regularly and being apprised of any information sent.
- Meet with an advisor every semester to have your advising hold released and ensure you are on track! Be sure to schedule your appointment prior to your registration date.
- Review your advisement report and the advising/program check sheet for your major and create a tentative schedule for the upcoming semester before you visit with your advisor. The WSU Catalog is a good resource.
- Write down any questions you have for your advisor so you do not forget before you get to your appointment.
- Take responsibility for your academic career at WSU. Advisors are here to assist you but you are also responsible for ensuring you meet program requirements and important deadlines.
ProTeach Admission
b.chapmanIt’s easier than you might think.
You may enroll in the WSU ProTeach Support Program before you enroll with the Professional Educator Standards Board (PESB) portfolio/external assessment. These are two separate programs, thus, there are two separate enrollments. One is with the state. One is with us.
WSU ProTeach Support Program enrollment application
- Complete WSU ProTeach Application
PESB online ProTeach Portfolio enrollment* application
- Must hold a current residency certification
- Taught for two years and accumulated at least 1.5 FTE
- Your enrollment date determines your submission deadline. Please review the PESB assessment calendar to ensure you have adequate time to complete your work.
Again, our ProTeach support program and the PESB ProTeach Portfolio are two different programs. Each program has a required application process. Acceptance to one program is not acceptance into both programs.
Applicants who would like to pursue a master’s degree along with their ProTeach must meet regular WSU Graduate School and college admission criteria.
Teachers must verify completion of the child abuse course work requirement when they apply for their Professional Certificate. The child abuse course is defined in WAC 181-79A-030(6) and includes the identification of physical, emotional, sexual, and substance abuse, information on the impact of abuse on the behavior and learning abilities of students, discussion of the responsibilities of a teacher to report abuse or provide assistance to students who are victims of abuse, and methods for teaching students about abuse of all types and their prevention.
