Getting to Know You: Mary Fletcher

Mary Fletcher – Kinesiology

What are you studying?

Kinesiology with a Strength and Conditioning minor

Year in school: Junior

Hometown: Bothell, Washington

Why are you studying Kinesiology? What do you hope to do with it after you graduate?

I’m studying Kinesiology because I love to learn about the human body, especially during physical activity, and how to incorporate fitness into everyday life. I hope to go to grad school afterwards: either physical therapy or a master’s program. I want to be able to either go into research, PT, or maybe even strength and conditioning. I’m still deciding, but I love that there’s options with what I can do after graduation.

Why did you choose WSU?

I transferred to WSU my sophomore year after going to school in Chicago. I transferred because it was cheaper to go to school in-state, but I also wanted to go to a school that had a lot of school spirit and have a true college experience. Also, WSU has the top Kinesiology program in the state, so for me, it was a no-brainer to come back here.

What’s been your favorite part of the WSU experience thus far?

My favorite part of the WSU experience is feeling like a part of the community, which is something I never felt at my other school. There is a lot that is offered here and a lot to be a part of here at WSU. I do a lot outside of the classroom, and from it, I have met so many different people and friends that have made my time here really worth it.

What’s been the biggest challenge so far?

One of my biggest challenges so far is coming back in person and adjusting from online. It’s difficult with a degree like mine that is very hands-on to go online. Now, being back, there is a huge adjustment to learning all the new materials. It was weird going from intro classes in person to 300-400 level classes.

As a college, we’re starting to focus more on our people being agents of change. What makes you an agent of change?

As an agent of change, I really want to help people incorporate fitness and physical activity into their everyday lives. Right now, I’m starting off small with helping my friends and people close to me by finding ways they can exercise that fits their lifestyle. I hope to continue this further by creating research or researching a larger population.
