Getting to Know You: Katelyn Saldivar

Katelyn Saldivar – Kinesiology

Year in school: junior

Hometown: Issaquah, Washington

What are you studying?

I am currently studying Kinesiology with a minor in Strength and Conditioning

Why are you studying Kinesiology? What do you hope to do with it after you graduate?

After participating in competitive dance for nine years, I have found an interest in learning how the body operates and how our body benefits from exercise and physical activity.  After I graduate, I hope to become a chiropractor and open my own clinic. I love interacting with new people and I find it rewarding to see how my work can help a client’s everyday life.

Why did you choose WSU?

I chose WSU because of the amazing community. I remember the first time I visited campus, I heard so many people yell “Go Cougs!” and I loved the spirit.

What’s been your favorite part of the WSU experience thus far?

My favorite part of the WSU experience has been meeting so many new people. I have gotten involved in different organizations such as Greek life, UREC and the athletics at WSU. In all of my interactions and experiences, everyone has been so supportive and friendly!

What has been the biggest challenge so far?

The biggest challenge for me thus far has been last year when classes were online due to COVID-19. I missed being in classes in person, especially in Kinesiology. There are many opportunities for our work to be hands-on in various labs, but we couldn’t do that due to the pandemic.

As a college, we’re focusing on our people being agents of change. What makes you an agent of change?

I currently instruct fitness classes through UREC on campus, and every time I teach, my goal is to create a positive and inclusive environment for everyone. Whether or not it is someone’s first workout in a year, or second workout in the day, I want everyone to leave my class feeling good about themselves physically and mentally. It is rewarding to see every person’s individual progress and it motivates me to become a better instructor.
