Jack Fenster – Elementary Education

Year in school: Senior

Hometown: Normandy Park, Washington

What are you studying? Elementary Education with an endorsement in Middle Level Mathematics (MLM).

Why are you studying this? What do you hope to do with this afterward?

I changed my major from Sports Management to Elementary Education after my second year of coaching my hometown swim team. I loved working with the kids on the team, and seeing them reach their goals made me so incredibly happy. I changed my major so that I can hopefully see those same faces in school.

Why did you choose WSU?

I chose WSU because both of my sisters went here and I had always loved visiting them.

What’s been your favorite part of the WSU experience thus far?

My favorite part of my WSU experience has been the people I have met. I have met some new friends, as well as the person I want to spend the rest of my life with.

What has been the biggest challenge so far?

I was diagnosed with ADHD during my freshman year. Before I got to college, I always struggled in school, and still did when I first got to college. I went home and was tutored on how to truly work at school. This changed my GPA drastically and now I like school far more than I did before.

As a college, we’re focusing on our people being agents of change. What makes you an agent of change?

As a student growing up, I never felt like school was very fun after a certain point. I hated school because nobody ever kept my attention. I hope to make my class an environment one in which everyone can succeed, so my students don’t look back and view school the same way I did.
