Brett Stewart — Kinesiology

Hometown: Quincy, WA

Year: Junior

Why did you choose Washington State University?
My freshman year was actually at WSU back in 2008, I spent time in the Air Force after that and I wanted to return to finish my degree where I started almost 10 years ago.

What inspired you to pursue a degree in kinesiology?
Kinesiology is my first step into becoming a physical therapist.

Who, or what, influenced your decision to pursue this degree?
My influences were my numerous shoulder and knee surgeries which taught me a lot about orthopedic surgery as well as physical therapy and kinesiology. This fueled my desire and passion for the industry.

Was pursing this degree always your plan?
Plans are fragile things, my career choice has fluctuated wildly as I’ve grown and matured and experienced new things.

What appeals to you most in this field?
The appeal to this field is the chance to help others who have been injured.

Have you had any experience in this area, such as an internship?
First-hand experience. Many surgeries which prompted lots of physical therapy.

What are your future plans as you go through the program?
I’d like to continue being a TA for Dr. Morgan (Kines 262/Human Anatomy) as well as get involved and work with some of the stellar researchers in our program.

What do you hope to get out of your career?
I really want to help those who have been in my shoes and experienced injury and are dealing with chronic pain.

Do you have any advice for incoming freshman pursuing this degree?
It’s ok to be undecided. Keep an open mind and involve yourself in things that interest you.

What, or who, motivates you as a student?
My motivation is to learn. This is my job. My job is to learn as much as I can and be the best student and learner I can be.

What kind of extracurricular activities are you a part of?
My extracurriculars include caring for my husky and involving myself in the Kines Club and being a TA for human anatomy.
