#MeetMeMonday: Kyla Balcomb-Bartok

Kyla Balcomb-Bartok – Kinesiology

Year in school: Senior

Hometown: Friday Harbor, Washington

Why are you studying Kinesiology?

I am studying Kinesiology because I want to be able to help people not only physically, but also mentally. My goals are body positivity and overall knowledge of human anatomy. I want to be able to help people with any questions or concerns they have to the best of my knowledge so they aren’t worried and know what to do.

What do you hope to do with it after you graduate?

My original plan was the be a Physical Therapist, but after a few more classes and shadowing experiences, I think I want to be a Personal Trainer. Work in gyms as an instructor for different fitness classes so patrons get the best experience. I am currently a fitness instructor with the WSU UREC and I love it.

Why did you choose WSU?

I chose WSU because of the Cougar connections and community. Not only that but also the Kinesiology department really drew me in with the labs and classes I could take to get experience. I have learned so much being here and am glad this is the school I chose.

What’s been your favorite part of the WSU experience thus far?

Working for CougVision! I get to go to almost every WSU Sports game and set up camera equipment and film for the school. Most of what you see on the big screens when watching the games is us and it is so much fun. Not only do I get to be a part of the crowd and cheer them on, but I get to watch the sports and understand the basics and rules as an observer so I can apply them to whatever I want to do in the future.

What has been the biggest challenge so far?

The biggest challenge so far honestly has been my classes. Each one is challenging in its own way and really expands what I know about human anatomy and fitness. It may be a challenge, but I am learning so much from it.

As a college, we’re focusing on our people being agents of change. What makes you an agent of change?

Growing up I was a dancer for 12 years. I started when I was 2 and ended roughly when I was 16, with a few gap years sprinkled in. I loved dancing, but in my studio specifically, the body positivity was very poor, and a lot of dancers were either getting injured or not eating enough, harming themselves. Because of this, I am actively in my daily jobs and roles in the Kinesiology department making sure body positivity and inclusion are emphasized. I am learning today to help those who were like the little me dancer struggling to be comfortable in their bodies, can grow, learn, and accept themselves.
