Getting to Know You: Ayla Reyes

Ayla Reyes – Elementary Education

Year in school: Junior

Why are you studying this? What do you hope to do after graduation?

I am studying this because I want to make an impact on the future generations! After graduation, I want to be an ELL teacher, making an impact on students daily!

Why did you choose WSU?

The community. The saying “Cougs help Cougs” is important to me and I think the Elementary Ed department is best at following that. Everyone is willing to help so we can be the best Cougs we can be!

What’s been your favorite part of the WSU experience thus far?

Just exploring a new environment. I am from the west side so coming here was a culture shock (so much wheat, so little trees). I enjoy walking downtown and trying new things out. WSU also has so many events that I wouldn’t be able to do back home.

What’s been the biggest challenge so far?

Transitioning to in-person. Online school was stressful but I got used to it. Now, coming back, some things are hard. For example, online I could wake up 5 minutes before my classes and lay in my PJs. Now, it is hard to wake up and get ready, but I’m thankful for being back!

As a college, we’re starting to focus more on our people being agents of change. What makes you an agent of change?

I think one way for change to happen is to be involved, whether that be educating yourself/others, voting, and speaking up when the time is right. Becoming activists and uplifting people’s voices during time of need is important for change. One way to start change is with the simplest of steps.
