#MeetMeMonday: Adelyn Valett

Adelyn Valett – Sport Management

Year in school: Junior

Hometown: Tri-Cities (WA)

What are you studying? Major: Sport Management. Minor: Communication

Why are you studying this? What do you hope to do with this afterward?

I came to college with a totally different career path in mind and I quickly realized how much I missed sports, specifically all-star cheerleading. I chose to change my degree to sports management to pursue a career in sports and I hope to one day own my own all-star cheer gym.

Why did you choose WSU?

I chose WSU because it is where my mom went to school as well as other people in my family. WSU is also close to home but still far enough away that I can feel independent. Definitely a perk of just a quick 2-hour drive home. I visited WSU when I was younger and found myself intrigued with the campus and atmosphere. When it came time to go to college WSU was an obvious choice.

What’s been your favorite part of the WSU experience thus far?

My favorite part of the WSU experience thus far has been joining Greek Life. I joined in my freshman year and found my home away from home paired with a group of people who are always there for me. I wanted an organization I could represent but also an organization that would hold me accountable and give me structure outside of classes. Greek life has greatly impacted my time here at WSU and encourage everyone I meet to go Greek! Go Chi O!

What has been the biggest challenge so far?

The biggest challenge has been getting back up when you get knocked down. Getting knocked down happens often in college whether it be a bad grade after you studied for hours and hours, fighting with friends, a breakup with a partner, getting sick for weeks straight, or losing your motivation to get out of bed. There are many things in college that will test your self-strength and how you handle tough situations. The worst thing is that you must do it, you must get that assignment done, you must go to class, and you must study no matter how you are feeling. So, the biggest challenge is definitely learning self-discipline and how to balance your mental health with school.

As a college, we’re focusing on our people being agents of change. What makes you an agent of change?

I believe I am an agent of change because every day I encourage conversations to change how female athletes are represented, spoken about, and viewed. Female athletes historically have been oppressed and today there is unacceptable behavior and language towards female athletes. I am an outspoken voice that always advocates for women and the pursuit of equity in the sports industry.
