Getting to Know You: Ruby Gellner

Ruby Gellner – Elementary Education with a minor in Human Development

Year: Junior
Hometown: Tacoma, WA

Why do you want to become a teacher?

I want to make an impact on the youth in our communities. I want to be someone’s reason that they are a better person.

What are you most passionate about when it comes to being a teacher?

Teachers have such a high influence on young children and adults. I feel bad for those who work all day long in an office. Those people will never receive the joy of little David working so hard to learn math and finally understands. They will never get the number of cards that say thank you for the most random acts. Teaching gives me such excitement that I get to spend time and grow relationships with these students who will take what they have learned from me and apply it to everyday life.

What/who inspired you to become a teacher?

This question is so hard for me to answer because I feel like my whole life has made me want to become a teacher. To start, my Grandma was a teacher and I would always want to play school with her. I had a lot of very influential teachers myself and coaches that built my personality. I also feel the need to make these types of impact I have received on other people.

What impact do you hope to make on your future students?

I hope my future student feel appreciate, inspired, and fearless. Not only do I want to impact the youth through education, I want to make them better people.

What is your favorite part of this program?

What I love the most our Education program here at Washington State University is how everyone is truly family. We help each other on much more than schoolwork. I have been challenged in many ways from this program and it is with the help of my peers that I succeed and keep moving forward.

Do you have any advice for incoming freshmen?

For incoming freshmen, I would advise them to be themselves. In today’s world we waste too much of our time consumed in our own thoughts. Just be you and I bet people will find you remarkable.
