Getting to Know You: Maire Dickens

Maire Dickens – Kinesiology Sports Science

Minor: Strength & Conditioning and Psychology
Year: Junior
Hometown: Boise, Idaho

What appeals to you most in this field?

I love the diversity that comes with Kinesiology. Yes, there are very prominent fields and careers that stem from Kinesiology but there are a million other options that aren’t commonly explored but serve a valuable role in our society. Additionally, Kinesiology is applicable to anyone and everyone you look at; it is information that can always be used and applied.

What makes this program special and what do you like most about the department?

I am so incredibly thankful for all the opportunities that are available within this program. Students, faculty and coaches are always more than happy to help you pursue your dreams, regardless of the path. I am very thankful for the relationships I have formed here, not only in the College of Education but at Washington State as a whole.

Do you have any advice for incoming freshman pursuing this degree?

Your options are limitless. Do not feel pressured to do anything just because it’s the common path to take. Step out of your comfort zone and try anything and everything to your heart’s desire without over committing yourself.

What, or who, motivates you as a student?

My parents have always been an endless source of motivation. They push and encourage me to be the best at everything I do; never settling for second-best. From their influence, I strive to be the greatest version of myself and I love helping others do the same for themselves.

What kind of extracurricular activities are you a part of?

I am apart of several different extracurricular activities, all of which I love to be involved in and feel that they enable me to be the best I can in what I do. In addition to classes, I am an intern in Bohler Gym, a volunteer with WSU Sports Nutrition, a TA for Human Anatomy, a student ambassador for the Kinesiology/Sport Science program, Vice President of Kinesiology Club and a Weight Room Attendant with UREC. While it can be overwhelming at times, these experiences have given me a different outlook on various areas and concepts within Kinesiology.

Favorites:

Class: I love all of my Kinesiology classes, but if I had to pick, it would be a tie between Human Anatomy (KINES 262) and my first Strength Training practicum course (KINES 412) for the Strength and Conditioning minor.
