Getting to Know You: Jacklyn Brendible

Jacklyn Brendible – Agricultural Education

Minors: Soil Science
Hometown: Sumner, WA
Year in School: Senior

Was pursing this degree always your plan?

I came to WSU to pursue a degree in Animal Science and was on the pre-veterinarian route, I had imagined myself as a vet since a very young age. That changed my second year here. I changed my major to Agricultural Education for various reasons, but one being the influence a teacher can have. I was extremely involved in my ag ed program in high school and always had a thought in the back of my mind that teaching agriculture was something I was passionate about. I set up a meeting the ag ed advisor here and went through my plan for classes and fell in love with the course plan. Now that I am a senior, I have experienced teaching in the classroom and more behind the scenes of an ag teacher and it makes me even more excited to have my own classroom and students to teach the importance of agriculture.

What appeals to you most in this field?

After I finish my bachelors here, I want to continue my education. After I receive my Masters, I want to teach in Alaska with students that are Alaskan Native. I am Alaskan Native and Tsimshian. I am very excited to teach students the importance of agriculture. Courses that I am interested in teaching are biology, environmental science, animal science or plant science. I think teaching ag is so important because it has three main components, classroom/ laboratory instruction, experiential learning and leadership opportunities like FFA. A student learns so much in and out of the classroom in an agriculture program that can be applied to any career they choose.

What, or who, motivates you as a student?

What keeps me motivated as a student is my family. They are always here for me. Although I am more then four hours away from home, I still call often and tell them about my day or what is going on in classes and more. They always encourage me and listen. I am very grateful for my family. My little brother is also a student at WSU and it’s been awesome to have a sibling here!

What kind of extracurricular activities are you a part of?

At my time at WSU, I become involved in the Native American organizations. Starting with my freshman year I was secretary for the Native American Woman’s Association and then became the co-chair for ASWSU Ku-Ah-Mah. I have been the co-chair for two years now and love getting involved and being apart of a group that puts on events like the Annual Round Dance, Powwow and more celebrating Native heritage.

I also was a resident advisor for two years at Stephenson North. I loved being able to meet new students and help them out at their first year at WSU.
