Getting to Know You: Shaniah Chapman

Shaniah Chapman – Elementary Education

Hometown: Vancouver, WA
Year: Senior

Why are you studying that? What do you hope to do with that after your graduation?

I am studying Elementary Education because I want to become a teacher. Once I graduate, I hope to find a job as an elementary school teacher in the Clark County area.

Why did you choose WSU Vancouver (as opposed to going somewhere like Pullman)?

I chose WSU Vancouver because I wanted to stay close to home, but still receive a 4-year college degree. I attended Clark College for 2 years to complete my prerequisites to the education program and then transferred to WSUV. Plus, a huge reason was to save money by not having to pay room and board.

What’s been your favorite part of the WSUV experience thus far?

My favorite part of the WSUV experience thus far is being a part of the education program. I have learned an incredible amount of useful information that I will apply to my future teaching. Our professors have been amazing as they have been guiding us through this program with their knowledge and experiences. I have also enjoyed being a part of a cohort because we are all really close and act as a support system for one another.

What’s been the biggest challenge so far?

The biggest challenge so far has been managing my time between the education program and my life outside of school. Of course school is a huge priority to me, but so is my self-care. Currently, I am enrolled in five classes, in the field twice a week, working once a week, and planning my fiancé and I’s wedding! It can be stressful at times, but when I take the time to focus on myself, I feel refreshed and reading to take on more tasks. Even though this has been a challenge, I’m glad I’m having these experience as they will be helpful for when I am a full-time classroom teacher.

As a college, we’re starting to focus more on our people being agents of change. What makes you an agent of change?

I am an agent of change because I want to be a teacher who creates a long-lasting effect on my students. By this, I mean I want to create a positive learning environment where my students feel safe and can be their best selves. As a future teacher, a big goal of mine is to build healthy and positive relationships with my students. By recognizing and getting to know all my students’ backgrounds, I can cater my instruction to meet their personal learning needs. When students know they are noticed and cared for, it shows in their learning. If I had to take away one thing from this program, it would be that all students, regardless of their backgrounds, can achieve academic excellence.
