Seattle sports radio personality to visit WSU

By Dustin VandeHoef

The Gordon-Enberg Speaker Series is bringing Seattle sports radio personality Mike “The Gasman” Gastineau to Washington State University on March 30. Beginning at 4:10 p.m. in Heald Hall G-3, Gastineau will recount his time as a radio personality, as well as dive into his book, “Sounders FC: Authentic Masterpiece.”

Gastineau was a popular talk show host on Seattle’s 950 AM KJR Radio station for 21 years, beginning in 1991. He retired from the station in 2012 and published a book on the Seattle Sounders in 2013.

“Sounders FC: Authentic Masterpiece” detailed the successful launch of the Seattle Sounders as a Major League Soccer franchise in 2009 and went on to become a regional best seller.

“Mike was allowed inside access to the Sounders management for a year,” said Tammy Crawford, a clinical assistant professor of sport management. “His book details the decision-making processes, building a fan base, marketing, and more.”

Gastineau will spend his day on campus visiting a number of classes in the sport management program and interacting with the students before the event, Crawford said.

“With all his experiences, he brings an interesting package that can address a lot of components in our program,” Crawford said. “Communication is a popular minor for students in sport management, so he’s perfect.”

The Gordon-Enberg Series was founded in the 1980s by the faculty of the women’s physical education department as a way to honor the retiring professors whose name it bears, said Cathryn Claussen, a sport management professor.

Claussen said the series was established to bring noteworthy experts on sport-related topics to campus in order to spread new ideas and start a dialogue about current topics.

Crawford said the event is open for all to attend.

“Anyone with an interest in sport management, business, marketing, communication and especially soccer will get something out of his talk,” Crawford said. “We’re trying to share information across curriculum.”
