Athletic Training Application Requirements and Process

INTRODUCTION

The Athletic Training Program (ATP) at Washington State University is an intensive educational experience preparing graduates for certification by the Board of Certification. The application procedure for admittance into the ATP is a competitive process and acceptance allows students to certify athletic training as their major and complete the degree requirements for graduation. On average, ~15-20 students are admitted each application cycle.

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS

The following are required for application into the ATP at Washington State University:

□   A grade of C or better in Human Anatomy (KINES 262) and Techniques in Athletic Training (Ath T 267)

□   Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 including the semester of application

□   Minimum of 50 course credits earned including the semester of application

□   Typed application form and written responses to Applicant Questions

□   Three letters of recommendation

□  Completed technical standards document

□  15 hours of observation in the WSU athletic training clinic (see the ATP Clinical Coordinator for details)

□  Interview with WSU AT Program alumni (see the ATP Clinical Coordinator for details)

INTERVIEW PROCESS

After applications have been reviewed, all qualified candidates will be contacted by the selection committee to set up an interview to assess personal attributes, maturity, and motivation for athletic training and to gain an overall impression of each candidate.

APPLICATION DEADLINE

The completed application must be received by the ATP Director by October 23, 2023 at 12:00 p.m. PDT.

SELECTION PROCESS

The ATP at Washington State University is seeking students with a commitment to learning and dedication to service. Athletic training is an incredibly rewarding career that opens up a variety of opportunities for the future. Athletic trainers are challenged on a daily basis while providing for the prevention, care and rehabilitation of injuries or illnesses suffered by active populations. The ATP at Washington State University is seeking students who are willing to embrace the challenges, curriculum and clinical experiences with professionalism, enthusiasm and a positive attitude.

Applications are scored in the following areas:

Writing responses20 points (4 points each)
Alumni interview response10 points
Reference rating5 points
Interview70 points
TOTAL POINTS POSSIBLE105

 

  • Total points earned on the application and interview will determine selection.
  • Candidates must score at least 70 of the total 105 points available to be considered for selection.
  • If any of the selected individuals decline admittance the applicant with the next highest score will be admitted.
  • Applicants who are not selected may re-apply the following year. Observation hours will not need to be redone.

Acceptance in the WSU Athletic Training Program

  • Applicants will be informed in writing as to the selection committee’s decision in late December. We request that applicants respond in writing their acceptance of the position in the program.
  • Applicants who are selected should plan to start with a pre-clinical rotation in the spring.  Then they will begin clinical education the following fall.  Students are expected to be back on campus near the end of July to begin orientation and clinical rotations.
  • Applicants who are selected will be required to show proof for the following at their expense:
    • Physical Exam
    • Hepatitis B vaccination
    • Negative TB screening
    • NATA Membership
    • Background check (~$50)
    • Liability Insurance each year
    • Transportation to/from clinical education experiences during the 2nd year
    • Professional fee
  • Applicants who are selected will be required to maintain a 3.0 GPA, achieve a B or better in all core athletic training classes, and show progressive clinical development to remain in the athletic training program.
