Where Are You Wednesday: Sean Rogers

Tell us a little about your background. Where you from or grow up? Did you go to WSU? What did you study at WSU?

I was born and raised in Shelton, Washington and attended WSU from 2011-2015 graduating with a Bachelors of Science in Athletic Training. I then attended Indiana State University from 2015-2017 graduating with a Doctorate in Athletic Training.

What has been your favorite thing about WSU, as well as the College of Education?

I can undoubtedly say that my favorite part of attending Washington State University was the family atmosphere that was present in every aspect of student life. Specific to the College of Education, I am especially appreciative of the mentorship, education, and opportunities that were provided to me as a student in the Athletic Training Program. I wouldn’t be where I am in my career today without the expertise and dedication of the athletic training faculty and preceptors.

What do you currently do? Tell us about your NOW life!

I’m now an Associate Professor and Coordinator of Clinical Education within the Master of Athletic Training Program at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. I mainly teach courses in orthopedic evaluation and physical rehabilitation, and do research on the health and healthcare disparities experienced by LGBTQIA+ patients.

What makes you an agent of change?

I was able to use the advocacy skills that I learned in my undergraduate and graduate education to engage in a collaborative effort to form a national LGBTQ+ Advisory Committee to the National Athletic Trainers’ Association. This committee focuses on providing clinicians with educational resources to better treat LGBTQIA+ patients while simultaneously advocating for inclusive and progressive policies. As an openly gay man in a relatively heteronormative field, I’ve found great passion in advocating for the greater LGBTQIA+ population to make future generations feel more welcome in sport and athletic training.
