Getting to Know You: Julie Christian

#WhereAreYouWednesday w/ Julie Christian

Date: Feb. 02, 2022

Tell us a little about your background. Where you from or grow up? Did you go to WSU? What did you study at WSU?

I grew up I Vancouver, WA. I attended Pacific Lutheran University for my undergrad but when looking to get my master’s and teaching certification, I chose WSU in Pullman. I got my master’s and teaching certificate in 2000. I then student taught back in Vancouver, WA. I have been teaching high school English since.

What has been your favorite thing about WSU, as well as the College of Education?

I loved the Pullman community. My husband and I were both in grad school at the same time 1998-2000. We were newly married and gave such fond memories of WSU and Pullman.

Why is being a land-grant university special?

It’s the community feel. I remember attending the Lentil Festival in Pullman and Ferdinand’s is only possible at a land grant university.

If you could improve one thing about WSU, what would it be?

Get rid of the image that it’s just a huge party school. I don’t think it is any more than any other school.

What do you currently do? Tell us about your NOW life!

I am a high school English teacher at Columbia River High School in Vancouver, WA. I have been there 9 years. I have 2 boys, 12 and 15, and my oldest is seriously considering WSU and teaching as his future path. My husband and I are proud members of the WSU alumni association and cheer on the Cougars in all athletic events. Apple Cup 2021 was a highlight this year!

What makes you an agent of change?

I believe in empowering student voice and choice in my classroom. I live teaching teens and seeing them excited about learning.

What is something unique about you. Something interesting that someone may say makes you YOU!

I love participating with my teacher colleagues and friends in weekly trivia at various establishments. We love it so much, we have attended the national tournament twice, once in Chicago and once in Las Vegas.
