Getting to Know You: Megan Sommer

Megan Sommer – Elementary Education

Year in school: Junior

Why are you studying Elementary Education? What do you hope to do with it after you graduate?

I’ve wanted to be a teacher for as long as I can remember. Children are the future of our world and by giving them the best education possible, I hope to create positive change for the generations to come. After I graduate, I plan on getting a classroom of my own and hopefully teaching third grade.

Why did you choose WSU?

My dad went to WSU so I was born and raised a Coug. When I came over for a tour, I fell in love with the enthusiasm and love that every student has for WSU. This was a place that definitely felt like a home and that was what sold me. I couldn’t image being anywhere else.

What’s been your favorite part of the WSU experience thus far?

Being in the College of Education! I love how dedicated each person is to becoming an amazing teacher and the passion they have for this profession. I’ve made some of my closest friendships in my education classes and they’ve made my college experience so much better.

What’s been the biggest challenge so far?

Going online for school was really hard. I was learning all of these tricks and tools to use with students, yet I wasn’t actually able to see it happen in the real world. I also really missed being able to see my classmates and work on projects with them.

As a college, we’re starting to focus more on our people being agents of change. What makes you an agent of change?

Being an agent of change is honestly why I want to become a teacher. I wanted to make a difference in my classroom, as well as in the world. By creating a safe and welcoming classroom community, I could be changing a student’s life and educating our future generation, which I believe will truly change the world.
