Getting to Know You: Makenna Alberts

Makenna Alberts – Sport Management

Year in school: senior

What are you studying?

Sport Management with a minor in economics, business administration concentration

Hometown: Wilsonville, Oregon

Why are you studying Sport Management? What do you hope to do with it after you graduate?

My family goes to a lot of Portland Winterhawks games. We went to all the big games and all the home playoff games the year they won the WHL Championship. After going to so many energetic games and events, and talking to the account manager, I knew I wanted to work in sports. He encouraged me to transfer to WSU. I have really enjoyed my classes and learning more about the sport industry. I hope to work in operations, college athletics, the Western Hockey League, or something similar.

Why did you choose WSU?

I chose WSU because it was the only school in the PAC-12 with a Sport Management program and I wanted an experience at a PAC-12 school.

What’s been your favorite part of the WSU experience thus far?

When College GameDay came here and we beat Oregon! Go Cougs!

What has been the biggest challenge so far?

I am a first-generation college student, and the biggest obstacle was financing my education. I didn’t know anything about scholarships or grants. I had to figure that all out.

As a college, we’re focusing more on our people being agents of change. What makes you an agent of change?

As I have lived in Pullman, I have tried to be a part of not just the campus community, but part of the local community. I have participated in adult rec sports, the Johnson Parade, and got involved in a city council campaign.
