Getting to Know You: Lexi Brantner

Lexi Brantner – Elementary Education, endorsement in special education

Year in school: Sophomore

Why are you studying this? What do you hope to do with it when you graduate?

I credit my mom, who is a principal in the Pullman School District, for sparking my interest in teaching. Watching the difference she has made in the lives of her students has inspired me to do the same. I have always had a passion for education and helping others which is why I decided to become a teacher. I want to ensure that all students have an equitable educational experience and receive the highest quality education possible. Everyone has a teacher that sticks out to them and made a difference in their life; I hope to be this teacher for my future students.

Why did you choose WSU?

My hometown, Palouse, is just twenty minutes from Pullman so I have been a Coug my whole life. My mom is a WSU alumna, my dad works on campus, and I’ve grown up going to football games and other WSU events. Because of this, I always knew I wanted to go to WSU. I also love the community aspect of WSU and the endless amount of opportunities available here.

What’s been your favorite part of the WSU experience thus far?

It’s pretty hard to beat cougar football Saturdays! Academically, though, the best experience has been making connections with my education teachers. They are all so knowledgable and passionate about teaching and I have learned a lot from them.

What’s been the biggest challenge so far?

The biggest challenge for me has been juggling my many obligations. I work on campus, substitute as a paraprofessional for the Pullman School District, I’m a member of the Greek community, and have several other commitments as well. At times, this can get pretty crazy but I love to stay busy and I enjoy everything I do!

As a college, we’re starting to focus more on our people being agents of change. What makes you an agent of change?

I believe all teachers are agents of change – that’s why we go into the profession. We are shaping the next generation and are able to create change by the values we instill in our students. I personally believe I am an agent of change because of my eagerness to learn and strong work ethic.
