Getting to Know You: Savannah Kerr

Savannah Kerr – Elementary Education with a middle-level mathematics endorsement

Hometown: St. John, WA

Year: Senior

Why do you want to become a teacher?
I love to see kids learn and to help them learn. I like learning as well and feel like I learn just as much as they do. I went into vet school after high school and couldn’t do it.

What made you come to WSU?
I came because it was close to home. I drive about an hour one-way. It was here or Eastern Washington University and WSU is closer and I like the program better than the other options. I have a daughter so I need to be somewhere close to home.

What grade do you want to teach?
I don’t know, I really don’t. I like the middle school years, like the math classes, but I like the littles in kindergarten.

How do you like your practicum?
I like it, it’s great. I’m at Lincoln Middle School in a 6th-grade math class. I’m not used to the larger classrooms in Pullman compared to what I’m used to. I’ve learned a lot of new teaching ideas. Before coming to WSU I worked in the paraeducator department and learned a lot of new techniques.

What are your goals for after graduation?
To find a job somewhere nearby, make the learning experience fun for every kid, and connect with them.

How do you juggle being a parent and a student?
I like to say I’m organized. Everything is planned out. I don’t do homework until my daughter goes to bed. So I do a lot of homework at night. I couldn’t do it without my mom.
