What are you most passionate about when it comes to being a teacher?
There is more to teaching than helping students to reach a target test score. Being a teacher means bringing enjoyment and personal interest into the material. I want to teach my students to think beyond test scores and find their own connection to the material. That is where they find interest in what they learn and enjoy the process of questioning the world around them. When students enjoy learning they are able to use it to help others, think critically and make change. I’m passionate about helping my students become active thinkers and helpful members in their communities.

What/who inspired you to become a teacher?
My high school anatomy and physiology teacher never let any of his students believe they were incapable of success. He would praise every students’ success and encourage their mistakes, saying that is where we can learn. In his classroom I learned just how capable I am and that there isn’t material that is “too difficult” to learn. The way he pushed me to try harder and find how I connect to the material was inspiring. I want to help other people feel this connection and confidence in their ability to learn what they are passionate about.

What is your favorite part of this program?
In the education program you become so close to the people in your block and section. You always have someone’s help and support. The program has a very strong sense of community and I love that everyone is an open resource for learning. It has really taught me how to helping students to learn how capable they are, allows them to take that knowledge to help others. I enjoy going through the program because you don’t feel like you are individually competing, it is a group effort to help others.
