Getting to Know You: Nora Sabia

Nora Sabia — Elementary Education

Hometown: Kent, Washington

Year: Senior

Why do you want to become a teacher?
I want to be a teacher because I am passionate about learning and love kids. The very first classroom I worked in, kindergarten, I walked in and simply felt at home. I remember the first student I worked with, I could see the wheels turning in his head as he figured out his math problem. I’ll never forget the look of pure pride on his face as he realized he’d solved it. I live for that moment, and I want to help other kiddos feel that pride in themselves and love learning.

Who inspired you to become a teacher?
My third grade teacher, Ms. Minkiewitz, is absolutely my inspiration in teaching. I was always very talkative, and she had a way of simultaneously calling me on it, as well as calling me to act up to my full potential. She believed in me and befriended me. I can only hope to make kids feel that way.

What do you hope to achieve in this career?
To me, teaching is the most honorable profession, more of a calling than a career. I hope as a teacher I can provide my students with a place to feel safe, loved, and encouraged. I hope students leave my classroom motivated to be good to one another and know that they are important and special. I hope I can inspire them to love learning, and to always do their absolute best. I want my classroom to be a place where kids can be themselves, and grow a little into the people they’ll become.
