Getting to Know You: Jessica Beitner

Jessica Beitner—Kinesiology

Minor: Psychology

Hometown: Covington, Washington

What inspired you to pursue a degree in kinesiology?
I originally planned on pursuing a nursing degree, but soon realized I was going into the wrong field. I heard about the field of kinesiology through my cousin who was pursuing this degree at the time. I have always found the human body fascinating. After learning that there was a degree pertaining to how we move and function on a daily basis, I knew that was what I wanted to do! I also found out that this degree pertained to physical therapy, which is what I want to pursue with this degree!

What do you hope to get out of your career?
Eventually, I hope to become a physical therapist. I love interacting with all kinds of people and helping them learn more about their body and self. Our body’s are a wonderful thing, and nothing makes me happier than the idea of helping someone heal and get back to their life. My ultimate goal would be to discover how we can better motivate individuals to habitually engage in physical activity and exercise, but I know that is a long shot!

Do you have any advice for incoming freshman pursuing this degree?
DO NOT PROCRASTINATE. It’s never too early to get involved and start engaging with other students and faculty in the program. I promise it will make your college experience more fulfilling. However, don’t forget to take time for yourself as well! Balance is important to stay healthy mentally and physically.

What motivates you as a student?
My main motivation as a student is my drive to become a health professional, so I can positively impact other’s lives. I love the idea of a healthy balanced lifestyle, and I want to help others obtain this mindset. My type A personality and need for success also pushes me to do my best. My family has also been a huge influence on my motivation as a student. They have provided the world for me, and I want to make them proud in every way possible.

What kind of extracurricular activities are you a part of?
I am currently an officer of the Kinesiology Club and a research assistant in the Psychology of Physical Activity Lab.
