Getting to Know You: Ian McKinley

Ian McKinley – Elementary Education

Hometown: Graham, WA

Year: Junior

Why do you want to become a teacher?

My goal is ultimately to become a principal. My mom is a high school math teacher so I got to see the in’s and out’s. I saw how the administration could improve the teachers. They were not delegating well. I hope to improve that. Also, I volunteered at my church and previous elementary school. The elementary school was cool because my family had a connection with the principal of the school.

What made you come to WSU?

My brother graduated here last semester. I got to hang out, see the campus, and go to football games. I went to a community college and wanted to grow. Other schools were too small.

What advice do you have for freshmen?

Get to know your advisors. I have a really good relationship with my advisor. Ask questions and meet with your professors. Get connected. Whether it’s people in your major or outside. Networking has helped me and people can vouch for you.

Why a math endorsement?

I love math. Math has always come easily to me. Having a math teacher as a mom and an engineer as a dad, I kind of had to be. My professor has talked about engaging kids in math. One thing I have gleaned from him is to teach for ideas rather than teaching for answers. Mistakes are important for learning.
