Getting to Know You: Hallie Music

Why did you choose Washington State University?
I came to a point in my life where I realized I could go anywhere and do anything, so I picked WSU. My cousin goes here so I figured I would come out to visit and while it seemed intimidating, it seemed like a place I could belong.

What inspired you to pursue a degree in kinesiology?
I love the way the human body functions. Everything is so interconnected; one section can affect any other in ways of varying degree. It is so interesting and complex.

What appeals to you most in this field?
Kinesiology is multidisciplinary, the very first thing I learned in the first kines class I took. There are so many focus areas but they also connect. Nutrition, sport, injury prevention, development, psychology, sociology, biomechanics, and there are more. You can study one, study a variety, or study them all broadly depending on your interests and passions.

What makes this program special and what do you like most about the department?
There are labs associated with almost every class, meaning you get hands on, real time experience in class. I also like how tight knit the kines department is. I have only been here for a semester but I already know multiple of the faculty, have friends in the same major, and know the people in the office by name.

Do you have any advice for incoming freshman pursuing this degree?
Go to your advisor with a plan. Do not wait until a week before you need to schedule classes and have them tell you what classes you should take. Research the classes offered, see what you are interested in, then go to them with questions. They are a resource to help you reach your goals, no matter how out-of-the-box they may be. If you do not share your ideas and your passions with them, they will not know how to individually assist you and they will give you the standard degree plan.
