Getting to Know You: Grace Ku

Grace Ku – Elementary Education

Hometown: Pyeongtaek, South Korea

Year: Senior

What made you come to WSU?

I’ve lived on base most of my life. I was looking for a four seasons state. If it’s too hot I’ll be melting. Plus I was looking for a college with a good education program.

Do you want to go back to South Korea to teach?

Yes, I’m hoping to go back over and teach on the base at the school where I went most of my life.

What was the biggest challenge coming from Korea to WSU?

When I first came here I was very homesick. Everything was new even though I spoke English and went to English schools. Even though it was challenging, it helped me become who I am today and overcome obstacles in my life.

What inspired you to teach?

My fifth grade teacher in Korea. She did a lot of things like connecting with the kids, especially with so many kids from different backgrounds. She built a community where everyone feels welcome. She encouraged you to pursue your dreams while feeling welcome in the community.

What grade do you want to teach?

Kindergarten through second grade. The little ones! I think this is a crucial time for kids. They learn social interactions and it’s a stepping tone to achieving their dreams. It’s a time when they can expand further from where they are now.

What are the highlights of your time at WSU?

Meeting a lot of people in Washington and outside of Washington with the same dreams of becoming a teacher. It makes me feel supported and prepared. We support each other as future educators.

What advice do you have for freshmen?

Don’t give up! Even when you think you don’t belong sometimes. There will always be something that reminds you why you should be here.

What do you hope your students learn from you?

I hope what they learn goes beyond the classroom. I wish they step forward and support anyone who needs to build confidence or just needs someone in their life.
