Getting to Know You: Emily Metcalf

Emily Metcalf – Elementary Education

Hometown: Auburn, WA

Year: Senior

Why did you choose WSU?
As soon as I visited Pullman, I immediately felt the ‘Cougs helping Cougs’ atmosphere, and any stress and worry I had about college melted away. From the minute I stepped onto campus I knew this was my home and that feeling has never changed.

What/who inspired you to become a teacher?
Looking back, I can recall the teachers that positively impacted my education, many of whom I am still in contact with today. A good teacher provides a safe learning environment that allows each student to grow and succeed using methods that support their individual needs. The teachers I had supported me and inspired me to have the same passion to shape little minds. Without the opportunity to feel their support, care, and encouragement, I would not be who I am today.

What do you hope to achieve in this career?
In this career, I hope to show my students that learning is fun. Learning can be hard and it can be frustrating, but overall learning is full of endless opportunities. I hope that my classroom is a safe environment that emphasizes each individual’s strengths, and supports what may be their weakness. I want to set high expectations for each student, and I hope to continue to push them to be the best version of themselves, while still having fun and being relatable.

What is your favorite part of this program?
My favorite part about the program is the amount of support that is provided. The College of Education pushes us all to be the best version of ourselves so that we can be the best for our students.

Do you have any advice for incoming freshmen?
The advice I have for incoming freshman is to enjoy every second of this experience, take advantage of everything you can, from on-campus resources to clubs and organizations. The four years you have here will go by much faster than you think.
