Getting to Know You: EJ Hayward

EJ Hayward – Sport Science

Minors: Psychology

Year: Junior

Hometown: Puyallup, WA

What inspired you to pursue your degree?

Growing up I was always active, playing sports and exercising, which helped me develop my passion for health and fitness. I chose sport science in hopes that I would be able to apply my passion into real-life scenarios that would also benefit others.

Who, or what, influenced your decision to pursue this degree?

My high school weight training teacher/coach had a major influence on my decision to pursue a sport science degree. He helped introduce me to strength training and health education.

Was pursuing this degree always your plan?

Originally, I declared my major for athletic training my freshman year but changed it only a semester after starting at WSU. Sport science gave me the ability to keep my options open, and not limit myself to only one aspect of the health industry. Ever since switching to sport science, doors have been opening left and right, and I am more than grateful for the opportunities that have presented themselves.

What is your dream job after college?

To be a personal trainer for high school and college level athletes.

What are your future plans as you go through the program?

After graduating in May 2020, I would like to work as a strength and conditioning coach in a sports team or private gym setting. It has always been a dream of mine to own my own personal training gym later on in my career.

Do You have any advice for incoming freshmen pursuing this degree?

Know that it is okay to fail, but it’s what you learn from those failures that will propel you to success.

Who or what motivates you as a student?

My family has always motivated me to do better, and succeed in whatever I choose to do. They are my biggest supporters and have guided me through times of stress and success.

What kind of extracurricular activities are you a part of?

I am the social media chair for Kinesiology Club and also volunteer with Pullman Parks & Rec as a youth sports coach.
