Getting to Know You: Emily Harris

Emily Harris – Sport Management

Year in school: Junior

Why are you studying Sport Management? What do you hope to do with this after you graduate?

Sports have always been a part of my life whether it was watching my brother play or me playing. It has always been something that I’ve been interested in but didn’t think would be realistic to study and go into the field of. My mom noticed how interested I was in it and was the one who suggested that I change my major from human development to Sport Management, telling me that it would be more worth it to learn and pursue a career that I was interested in and enjoyed than to stick with something that was easy and practical. After graduation, I would like to work in college athletics, whether that be at the NCAA level or within a college itself.

Why did you choose WSU?

Being a 3rd generation Coug, I originally did not want to come to WSU Pullman. I wanted to be different than my family members and get out of Washington. There were a few twists and turns that led me here, but after being here for three years, this is now home.

What’s been your favorite part of the WSU experience thus far?

My favorite part of WSU is how this is really a community. While we may be a large university, the town of Pullman brings us all together. There is no where else like this.

What’s been the biggest challenge so far?

The biggest challenge so far is feeling as if I am not doing enough. As a woman in the sports field, there is a certain amount of pressure to show your worth and knowledge and to show that you belong. I have constantly felt like I am not doing enough to build my resume and get me to my desired job.

As a college, we’re starting to focus more on our people being agents of change. What makes you an agent of change?

I am an agent of change because of the male-dominated field I am going into. I want to change the norm and show that women are allowed to be where the men are, and show that we belong there. I think we are in a time where we are seeing more women not shy away from what they want and instead, showing they belong.
