Getting to Know You: Dalton Dierickx

Dalton Dierickx – Sport Management

Year in school: 3rd year senior

Hometown: Camas, Washington

Why are you studying Sport Management? What do you hope to do with it after you graduate?

I am studying Sport Management because I still wanted to be involved with sports after I finished playing them competitively. Sports have been an important part of my life ever since I was born. My parents have always told me to find a job that I love doing, so this is a big reason why I want to graduate with a Sport Management degree. After I graduate, I hope to become a professional scout for an NFL team. I have always wanted to help a professional football team win a championship, so by being a scout I can help find the right talent for a team. The talent I scout will then be able to help an NFL team win the Super Bowl.

Why did you choose WSU?

I chose WSU because of the community aspect I felt when I visited my senior year of high school. I could tell that people felt that Pullman was more than school- they felt like it was their home, so I wanted that feeling for my college experience. Pullman is also close to my house, so if I ever need to go home, I am only a 6-hour drive away. WSU was also one of the only schools that I wanted to go to that offered a Sport Management degree.

What’s been your favorite part of the WSU experience?

My favorite part of my WSU experience is meeting so many new people. Everyone I have met is kind and fun to be around. At WSU I have met people who I will be friends with for the rest of my life. Going to sporting events with all of these people makes them even more fun no matter if WSU wins or loses.

What has been the biggest challenge?

The biggest challenge so far would have to be trying to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic while in school. It was not easy to participate in school online compared to in person. When learning, it is a lot easier for me to be successful when I have a more tangible learning environment. Also, it was unfortunate that I lost a year of my college experience by not being able to go to sporting events or meet new people on campus last year because of COVID-19.

As a college, we’re starting to focus more on our people being agents of change. What makes you an agent of change?

When I think about change, my focus is to try and create a more inclusive culture. This inclusive culture would involve students stepping in when they feel that other students are bullying their peers. Bullying is always a problem at schools, and I always try my best to stop any bullying when I see it on campus. Everyone at this school is different in their own way and we must accept who they are without bringing them down.
