Joy Egbert receives Fulbright Specialist Award to Macedonia

English language prof gets Fulbright to Macedonia

By C. Brandon Chapman – College of Education

Washington State University professor Joy Egbert has received a Fulbright Specialist Award from the U.S. Department of State.

The program sends U.S. faculty and professionals to various academic institutions abroad for 2‑6 weeks to serve as expert consultants on curricula, faculty development, institutional planning and related subjects.

Egbert, a professor of English Language Learners and educational technology within the College of Education, will spend three weeks in Macedonia in March.

While there, she will be at Saints Cyril and Methodius University of Skopje, sharing her research on teaching and English, as well facilitating workshops. She’ll also be a plenary speaker at the university’s international English studies conference.

A well-published faculty member, Egbert has skills in English and technology that are in global demand right now. She has also been the editor of the TESOL Journal, which focuses on ‘teaching English to speakers of other languages.’

That expertise will come in handy. The university doesn’t have a library, and there’s not much in the way of modern technology. Egbert looks at this opportunity as a service.

“I’ve already started working on task engagement from the Macedonian perspective,” Egbert said. “My main role is to ask the hosts about their goals for my time there, and to make sure I meet them in ways that they find acceptable.”
