Getting to Know You: Kyle North

Kyle North — Kinesiology undergraduate student Q&A

Hometown: Mukilteo, Washington

Year: Junior

What brought you to WSU?
For my family it’s a family school. My mom went here back in the 70s and my sister went here a couple years ago for communications, so it has always been something that my family has talked about, but I never really gave it a serious thought until I saw what the programs were. It’s a great school, great community, and now that I’m here I can’t see myself anywhere else.

You used to be a music major, why did you make the switch?
When I was in high school through community college I was all about music. I was in musical theater, jazz choir, all these other things and continued that in community college and did 2-3 years of just solid music classes. Then I got to a point where it was like this might not be for me, I might not be able to make a career out of this, so I looked at some stuff, thought about communications and then took a health and wellness class as I was trying to figure out what I wanted to do, and I just stuck with it.

What are you liking about the program?
Just the sense of community that it fosters. Everybody in the kines program is just so devoted, we all have the same mindset. We’re all in the program because we want to be healthy, we want to set an example for people, and we want to help people be healthier. I think that’s a unifying factor in the kines program. Everyone is working together toward a common goal. There’s a sense of team.

What is your dream job?
Pipe dream goal I’d really like to work for a sports team doing athletic training for either a professional soccer team or semi-professional soccer team, something like that. That would be my major goal, but overall just trying to change the health mentality that we’ve got in the country, and just try to help people be healthier overall, and if I get to work with a sports team or just other athletes, I mean, that’s just a side-benefit at that point.
