About Dr. Sheftel
Dr. Sheftel’s research and community collaborations focus on supporting post-school transition youth and young adults with disabilities, and equity and inclusion in educational, community, and health settings. To-date, Dr. Sheftel has received $2.1 million in funding to support employment, social and emotional, and health outcomes for youth and adults. She has served as a PI or a Co-I on the following projects: (1) Motivational Enhancement Group Intervention – a self-determination/self-advocacy and career development curriculum for youth and young adults with disabilities; (2) My Dream: My Determination, Resilience, Empowerment, Advocacy, and Motivation curriculum for young adults with intellectual and development disabilities; (3) COMMIT: Career, Opportunity, Meaning, Motivation in Teaching curriculum for pre-service teachers; (4) implementation and evaluation of Washington Transition Program/Motivational Enhancement Group Intervention; (5) evaluation of statewide re-entry planning and processes for youth involved in Juvenile Rehabilitation; (6) statewide evaluations of service coordination between schools and vocational rehabilitation; and (7) development of professional development resources for Cooperative Extension to support immunization uptake among underserved populations. Dr. Sheftel also coordinated two statewide institutes focused on supporting post-school outcomes for students with disabilities. Finally, Dr. Sheftel has taught pre-service teacher courses on introduction to special education, assessment and curriculum, and special education law. When not working, Dr. Sheftel could be found hiking, camping, or reading a book.
