Frequently asked questions
Does every lesson have to attempt every standard?
- No. You are not required to address every PPA criterion in each lesson. However, every criterion must be addressed and met at least once during the two or more administrations of the PPA.
Can the cooperating teacher mark off items before I do a formal PPA lesson?
- The cooperating teacher may consult with the supervisor and give evidence of meeting the standards. The university supervisor may use additional sources of information such as informal observations and the cooperating teachers’ input.
Do many people flunk student teaching because of the PPA?
- The student teaching experience is designed to give the student teacher multiple opportunities to meet the standard, including a minimum of two formally planned and taught lessons.
What happens if I don’t pass?
- Student teachers should be working closely with their University supervisor to address concerns. Arrangements and accommodations will be discussed individually.
Can I pass the Performance based pedagogy assessment (PPA) in one lesson?
- It is not likely that all subcategories of the PPA can be met in one lesson.
How do I make a plan for family interaction which supports student learning?
- Within your instructional plan you should include a section on independent practice. This section should describe how students will extend their experiences with the content and understanding beyond the scope of the lesson outside of class. Include possibilities for family interactions. Identify at least one way in which you might involve the students’ families in this instructional plan.
