The faculty in the College of Education at Washington State University have established the College of Education Faculty Excellence Awards in order to recognize truly outstanding accomplishments and exceptional individual scholastic achievements. The awards are designed to honor faculty members who demonstrate the highest levels of leadership, performance, and excellence in the pursuit of the college's academic and professional goals and, thereby, the fulfillment of its mission. College of Education Faculty Excellence Awards are given in four broad areas: Teaching, Research, Service, and Diversity.
Nominations for the College of Education Faculty Excellence Awards are solicited annually. Two awards will be presented per year following the pattern below:
2009 -- Teaching and Service
2010 -- Research and Diversity
2011 -- Teaching and Service
The selection committee, appointed by the College of Education Faculty Affairs Committee (CEFAC), may elect to give a combination of awards to a faculty member or not to give an award.
Eligibility
All regularly appointed members of the College of Education faculty (half time or greater) at the time of the election are eligible for this award.
Nominations
DUE: March 6
An eligible person can be nominated by any member of the College of Education faculty or any person with an in-depth knowledge of the activities of the person. Self-nominations may be made.
Process
Each nominator is responsible for submitting to the dean's office, by March 6, a complete two-page nominating form (available below and online) and a curriculum vita of the nominee, and other materials deemed useful for indicating the nominee's contributions and achievements.
Information required for finalists
- A brief description of the nominee's work in the College of Education relative to the award.
- An interpretive evaluation of the nominee's contribution in relation to the award, including a summary of major accomplishments and evidence of impact on the nominee's field. An assessment of the role of collaborators such as graduate students and co-workers should be included.
- A list of invited addresses and other honors related to the nominee's contribution.
- A selected bibliography; appropriate descriptions of artistic and other creative works; or other documentary items relevant to the award. One copy each of especially significant papers, books, monographs, or book reviews may be submitted at the discretion of the nominator.
Selection committee
The selection committee for the awards will be appointed by the College of Education Faculty Affairs Committee (CEFAC). The committee will be comprised of four faculty members, two from each of the two departments in the college as well as the associate dean for administration, research and graduate studies. Of the two members from each department, one will be from Pullman and one from a regional campus. The selection committee will review all nominations for the award and select the award recipients.
Presentation of awards
Each award, consisting of a medallion, a certificate and letter of recognition from the dean of the college and the chair of the college of Education Faculty Affairs Committee, and a $750 cash award will be presented by the dean at an appropriate event as a way of recognizing the contribution of the recipient and of reaffirming the college's dedication to excellence in its activities. The name and award of each recipient will be placed on a plaque that will be prominently displayed in the College of Education.

Teaching

Purpose
The College of Education Faculty Excellence Award for Teaching is presented to members of the faculty in recognition of truly outstanding accomplishment in the establishment of excellence in the instructional programs of the College of Education.

Criteria
Activities encompassed by this award may be either an outstanding singular accomplishment or a record of excellence over a period of years which may include:- curriculum and course development
- innovation and originality
- enthusiasm for and in teaching
- interest in, care and concern for, and availability to students
- range of teaching performance, undergraduate, graduate, peer, and professional
- duration of demonstrated excellence.
- evidence of high quality/effective/impacting course instruction
Service

Purpose
The intent of the College of Education Faculty Excellence Award for Service is to recognize the outstanding performance by a College of Education faculty member toward fulfilling the College's service mission. The award serves to honor exceptional accomplishments through activities directed toward extending instruction, research, and other resources to a broader public both within and beyond the college and university. -
Criteria
Activities encompassed by this award are either an outstanding singular accomplishment or a collective record of excellence in service which has a major impact on the College of Education, the University, the discipline or the community. Contributions may include:

developing successful new ideas for extended university services and activities

revitalizing an existing service program
- bridging the gap between college-based resources and the public
- enhancing the public's appreciation of the College of Education within and beyond the university.
Research

Purpose
The College of Education Faculty Excellence Award for Research is presented to members of the faculty in the College in recognition of excellence and outstanding accomplishment in research, scholarship, or other types of creative activity. -
Criteria
This award will be given for a research or creative contribution completed as a member of the College of Education at Washington State University. Activities encompassed by this award may be empirical, theoretical, and/or artistic. They may be either an outstanding singular accomplishment or a record of excellence over a period of years which may include:
- a novel or creative contribution
- a contribution with a significant impact on the field
- a contribution recognized though honors or stature in the field
Diversity

Purpose
The purpose of this award is to recognize and reward faculty who have made significant contributions for promoting diversity, broadly conceived, as an essential component of the college's quest for excellence.

Criteria
Successful nominees should have taken a leadership role beyond the expectations of their position to:
- demonstrate efforts to bring change on issues regarding diversity within his/her academic unit, campus, or community
- demonstrate via scholarship or other substantive contributions a commitment to diversity
- demonstrate a commitment to promoting access, equity, and success for all people embraced by the mission of the College of Education
- demonstrate the use of diversity to generate shifts in knowledge and perspective and develop a more vibrant college culture.
Staff Excellence Award

Faculty, staff, and students in the college are invited to submit nominations for a Staff Excellence Award, as described below.
Purpose
The award was established to recognize the outstanding achievements and contributions of classified and exempt staff. The purposes of this award include (1) publicizing the positive attributes and contributions made by staff, (2) rewarding and recognizing individuals who achieve excellence, and (3) encouraging a high degree of consciousness regarding excellence in the workplace for the entire staff.
Eligibility and criteria
DUE: March 6
All classified and exempt staff members are eligible to be nominated for the Staff Excellence Award if they have been employed in the College of Education for at least 12 months and if they have not been recipients of the award within the past three years. Criteria for the award are the following:
- Performance in the person's assigned duties. (For example: efficiency, conscientiousness, timeliness, job excellence, continuous improvement)
- Inspiration of excellence in others. (For example: motivational, professional and ethical behavior, positive attitude)
- Teamwork in the workplace. (For example: flexibility, camaraderie, effective communication, knowledge sharing, team building, interpersonal skills)
- Contribution to the college's image and goals. (For example: customer relations, community service, recognition for service, support and implementation of diversity goals, support of other College initiatives, e.g., partnership, grants, virtual WSU)
Selection committee
A committee comprised of four staff members, two faculty members and two graduate students will serve as the Staff Excellence Award Selection Committee. One staff member will be appointed by his/her unit head from each of the following units: Department of Educational Leadership & Counseling Psychology, Department of Teaching & Learning, Dean's Office, Student Services Office. The chair of each department will also appoint one faculty member and one graduate student to serve on the selection committee. The term of office will be two years, with half the membership returning each year. Each year, members of the committee will elect their own committee chair.
Selection process
Faculty, staff, administrators, and/or students in the college may nominate staff members to be considered for this award. Nominations require completion of the nomination form and may include optional letters of support.
Award
The award recipient will be presented a cash award and plaque. Other nominees deemed especially meritorious may also be recognized.
