Who we are
We are a dynamic group of diverse graduate and professional students at the nexus of global and local intersections of educational research and practice. We purposefully engage in cutting-edge research with a broad spectrum of views and perspectives and promote cross-disciplinary, trans-program interactions and collaborations.
What we do
We support and advocate for graduate students in all programs within the College of Education by promoting dialogic opportunities for both intellectual growth and practical application. Our activities are a fusion between the intellectual and the social. We aim to foster an enhanced learning and social environment to create opportunities for meaningful interactions between faculty, administration, staff and graduate students in the College of Education. EGO seeks to provide holistic support to graduate students in hopes of inspiring a creative and collaborative community within the College.
Highlighted activities
- EGO brown bags – these are lunch hour how-to workshops geared towards providing professional development to graduate students. Brownbags cover topics such as how to publish, ow to present at an academic conference, and how to prepare a job talk.
- Speaker’s series – Every year, EGO officers work to invite a well known scholar to give an invited lecture. Guests have included Professor Geneva Gay, a renowned multi-cultural education expert.
- EGO socials – we provide informal opportunities for graduate students and their families to socialize. Examples of social activities include: attending WSU sporting events and/or theatrical productions on campus as a group. There are also unofficial opportunities to socialize off-campus. University policy prevents EGO from officially organizing such off campus social events.
- Socratic conversations – We organize four Socratic conversations per semester. These are intellectual treats! Participants are able to engage faculty and colleagues from other programs- on issues/theories that are relevant in the field of education.
- Graduate student Journal – This online, peer-reviewed journal will provide publishing opportunities to graduate students in the college as well as enable us to form collaborative relationships with other grads throughout the Pacific Northwest.
- Research symposium - EGO works with the organizers of the annual Globalization, Diversity and Education conference to provide opportunities for graduate students to not only present their research, but to also mingle with scholars.
How we do it
- Graduate students orientation – EGO organizes an orientation at the beginning of the semester for new and returning graduate students
- Monthly or bi-monthly general meetings – Regularly scheduled meetings provide an opportunity for students to stay abreast of EGO activities
