Research interests
Kay Stern’s research interests concern
supervision, mentoring of pre-service and beginning
teachers, and using standard-based assessment to
improve one’s teaching practice.
Teaching/professional interests
Stern teaches Introduction to the Field of Education,
Practicum I and II, which are field experiences for
juniors. In addition to teaching, Stern coordinates the
field placements for all four programs in Vancouver,
and supervises students in the secondary certification
program, the MIT program, and undergraduate programs.
She serves on the MIT, secondary, and undergraduate
program committees as well. Prior to coming to the
university, Stern taught for 30 years in the K-12
classroom.

- Member of National Council of Social Studies
- Member of Delta Kappa Gamma International
- Coordinator, 3rd Congressional District, for
“We the People: the Citizen and the
Constitution,” responsible for in-services,
textbook distribution, and facilitating state
institutes for practicing teachers to teach civics in
grades 5 – high school. As a member of this
group, Stern reviewed and developed lessons to
implement the National Civic Standards.
