Research interests
Mary F. Roe is interested in literacy teacher education, and literacy instruction, teaching, and assessment. Her current project involves the concept of differentiation. The purposes of the first year of this study are to understand the literacy instructional practices typical of language arts and social studies teachers, identify teachers’ differentiation of instruction, and pinpoint challenges teachers encounter, especially for underachieving students and second language learners. Based on this information, she will propose a differentiation model and work with teachers to apply it to middle level classrooms.
Teaching/professional interests
Dr. Roe teaches undergraduate and graduate literacy courses. Roe has taught elementary and middle school, and worked as a reading specialist and counselor for 19 years. She is an editorial board member for Research in Middle Level Education, Reading Teacher, Journal of Literacy Research, Reading Research and Instruction, Childhood Education, and Journal of Educational Research.
