Research interests
Armando Laguardia researches public policy and its
impact on low income and minority students in public
schools, college participation and success of minority
and Latino students, teacher preparation and teacher
diversity in the United States, and improving schooling
for underperforming populations.
Teaching/professional interests
Laguardia teaches Multicultural Education in a Global
Society, Social Foundations of Education, Diversity in
School and Society, Issues in At-Risk Education, and
Multicultural Curriculum and Management. Besides
teaching at two universities for twenty-five years,
Laguardia is a former high school social studies and
language arts teacher. He also taught in and directed
college preparation programs for low income and
minority students (Upward Bound, High School
Equivalency Program).
Recent accomplishments
- 2004 Lifetime Achievement Award, Keep Living the
Dream, Tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. World Arts
Foundation, Portland, Oregon.
- 2004 Elected 2nd Vice President of the Northwest
Association of Teacher Educators; and Chair, Task Force
on Diversity in the Teaching Profession, Association of
Teacher Educators.
- Invited Presentation to the 2005 AERA Montreal
Canada. Preparing Teachers. Founder and contributor.
- 2004 Appointed to the Board of Directors
Multicultural Perspectives, the refereed journal of the
National Association for Multicultural Education.
