Research interests
Gisela Ernst-Slavit’s work focuses on English as a second language (ESL), bilingual education, teacher education, and the preparation of teachers for diverse classrooms. She is a past president of WAESOL (Washington State English to Speakers of Other Languages).
Teaching/professional interests
Dr. Ernst-Slavit is a professor in bilingual/ESL education and coordinator of the bilingual/ESL program at Washington State University Vancouver. She teaches courses in sociolinguistics, literacy and biliteracy, research on second language teaching and learning, ESL methods, and critical issues in the education of Latino students.
Recent accomplishments
- Co-author of Paper to Practice: Using the PreK-12 English Language Proficiency Standards (2009) published by TESOL, Inc.
- Co-author of the revised Pre-K 12 English Language Proficiency Standards published by TESOL in 2006.
- Advisor of the Year Award (2008) bestowed by the WSU Association of Graduate and Professional Students.
- Excellence in External Funding Award (2008) bestowed by the College of Education Department of Teaching and Learning.
- Director of TEAMs project, a $1.3 million grant to expand and enhance the preparation of ELL teachers and school administrators in southwest Washington (2002-2008).
