College of Education

Collaboration & outreach

Welcome

Arlene HettArlene Hett

Senior Director
School & Community Collaboration Center

The School & Community Collaboration Center was created in 1994 to increase the College of Education's interaction with teachers and administrators, as well as school districts, social service agencies, businesses and communities. The center coordinates our efforts to study and resolve our nation’s social and educational issues, recognizing that involvement significantly improves the quality of our own preparation of teachers and educational leaders. We invite you to join with us in our partnership programs.

College offers two unique opportunities for teachers

Teach English as a second language in Japan: This position in Nishinomiya involves serving as an English language consultant to Japanese teachers of English.  It is open to faculty, staff, graduate students and alumni of the College of Education, Pullman School District teachers, and WSU affiliates. It is part of a partnership established in 1987 between the College of Education and the city of Nishinomiya. Review of applications starts March 1. See program details.

Recharge, explore with a summer sabbatical: The Dr. Vitt and Mary Ferrucci Distinguished Educator program was established to revitalize and update teachers’ math and science teaching methods, and to help teachers adapt their methods to interest children in mathematics, sciences, and technology. This salaried sabbatical of up to six weeks takes place on the WSU Pullman campus. It is given each year to one outstanding science, mathematics, or technology teacher of grades kindergarten through 12th grade.  The recipient works as a member of the College of Education faculty.  Recipients of this award receive paid travel, lodging, and project expenses as well as a stipend. Application deadline March 1.  See program details.

Early Learning Coalition

Do you have a commitment to early learning research or activities at WSU? Are you interested in knowing more about the early learning community at the local, state, or national level? If so, you will want to be involved with the Early Learning Coalition. Its mission is to develop and administer educational programs and research-based services that promote the nurture and care of infants and children, advancing healthy and happy, whole-child development from conception to classroom.

Leadership Development

The Leadership Development Camp, a week-long summer event designed for Coeur d'Alene Tribe youth ages 13-17 years, aims to develop and strengthen leadership, resiliency, and academic skills.  WSU faculty, staff, graduate students and tribal camp counselors are contracted to guide learning experiences.  Visit the Web site of the 2009 leadership camp for a glimpse of the camp's fifth successful year.
