Teacher ProCert admission requirements
All applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Hold a valid Residency Teacher Certificate
- Current employment as a teacher in a Washington public or approved private school or a state agency which provides educational services to students.
- Verification of provisional status — Completion of two consecutive years of successful teaching with a Washington public school or approved private school, and a signed third-year contract since the issuance of a residency teacher certificate. A teacher is eligible to enroll in a ProCert Program prior to this with support from the teacher’s employing school district, approved private school or agency that provides educational services for students.
- Complete WSU’s ProCert Application
- Admission to Washington State University (not required if pursuing the Program-for-fee option).
Applicants wishing to pursue a master’s degree along with their ProCert must meet WSU Graduate School and Department of Teaching and Learning admission criteria. With prior approval from a teacher's master's advisor, the Pre-assessment (T&L 541) and Culminating Seminar (T&L 543) may be applied to a master's.
Teachers must verify completion of the child abuse course work requirement when they apply for their Professional Certificate. The child abuse course is defined in WAC 181-79A-030(6) and includes the identification of physical, emotional, sexual, and substance abuse, information on the impact of abuse on the behavior and learning abilities of students, discussion of the responsibilities of a teacher to report abuse or provide assistance to students who are victims of abuse, and methods for teaching students about abuse of all types and their prevention.
