Remembering Judy

Judy Mitchell, front and center for the College of Education

As news of Judy Mitchell’s death sank in, I remembered that last week’s blog post featured her in a convergence of two of her happiest roles: ambassador for the College of Education, and sports fan. She was pictured at a fund-raising event for the Martinez Foundation,  standing beside WSU’s President Floyd at Safeco Field.  The photo above shows her with other faculty members, applauding a spring arts celebration starring Pullman students.

Judy was kind, smart, strong-willed. A tough cookie with a warm center. Just the kind of person I like as a boss — although, when I once used that word to introduce her, she chided me. She didn’t explain, but I’m sure the description wasn’t collegial enough for her.

I have so many fond memories of Judy… all of which were created within the last ten years. I came to know her as both caring and persistent. She welcomed us all with a smile and an equally large hug. She was an amazing leader with a vision for what made a difference. Whether it was in the classroom or at a Cougar basketball or football game, she was always the competitor, the fan, and at times the referee. If I had to pick one moment out from among so many, I think my favorite was when, in front of a great many visitors to a College of Education reception, Judy’s staff surprised her with an Honorary Cougar Alum award. For a moment Judy was simply speechless and beaming with Cougar Pride. I’ll miss her. WSU and the field of education has lost a treasure. All of us has lost a very dear friend.
